It’s been just over two weeks since the internet was last broken, this time without the help of Kim Kardashian’s backside. This most recent internet upheaval was in response to the news of arguably the prettiest boybander in history (those lashes!), Zayn Malik’s resignation from One Direction.
The twenty-two year old heartthrob cited his reasoning for leaving the über popular boyband as a need to spend some time out of the spotlight for a change. Despite his reasoning for a more secluded lifestyle, that may not be the direction in which Zayn’s future will be heading.
While many Directioners are still dying over the void left in One Direction, I am living for Zayn’s rumored solo career that may be on the way. A few days after his announcement to leave the band, a demo of Zayn’s first solo track was uploaded. The track titled “I Won’t Mind” is an acoustic folk song that is the lovechild of Zayn and UK Producer Naughty Boy. The demo is a far-cry from the songs Directioners are used to, but the soft and emotional melody will no doubt have old and new fans alike swooning. Listen to Zayn’s new sound below and be sure to comment and let me know what you think of it.
As some of you may know, One Direction was birthed as a result of UK’s X-Factor and Simon Cowell’s eye for talent (and cash cows). All five members Malik, Payne, Styles, Tomlinson, and Horan originally auditioned for the seventh season of the show as solo artists but failed to make the cut. However, they were given a second chance after guest judge Nicole Scherzinger’s suggestion of auditioning as a group. And the rest is history.
Zayn’s first attempt at a solo career on X-Factor was a flop, but with his success as a member of One Direction and his resulting legion of fans, he may just have what it takes to rise to the top.
Zayn’s departure begs the question if this was his plan all along (cue evil laugh). Perhaps Zayn stayed with One Direction long enough to cultivate a diehard fan base only to defect over to a solo career, which was previously unattainable to him. This isn’t the first time we have seen a member of a popular group leave to start a solo career and often at the expense of the rest of the group; N’Sync, Destiny’s Child, and Black Eyed Peas are but a few that suffered after a member went solo.
How do you think One Direction is going to fare without its resident bad boy? And will a successful solo career be in Zayn’s future? Sound off in the comment section with your thoughts.
