Following the success of her first two singles, Kiesza shows no signs of slowing down. Her music video for Hideaway is closing in on 90 million YouTube views and her music has stormed charts across the globe. Kiesza is also working on her forthcoming debut album with legendary producers, Skrillex and Diplo (who is currently linked to Madonna's upcoming record). With all of the buzz surrounding this diva of dance, it is very clear that there are massive things in store for this newcomer to the pop music scene.
As of today, “Hideaway” has charted in over 23 countries, including #1 on the UK Dance charts and number #20 on the Billboard Top 40. How does that feel?
K: It feels amazing to know that the world is embracing my music!
Now is it actually true that you wrote “Hideway” in about an hour!?
K: Yes. It’s true. Less than that to be exact. The entire production, writing, mixing, mastering was actually done in 90 minutes. It almost as if the song wrote itself and was just waiting for the right moment to come out.
"Hideaway" is a powerful dance track and definitely my jam of the summer. Have you always been inspired by that classic nineties house sound?
K: Yes I was brought up in a very different musical environment, but thanks to my mom, 90’s music was practically engrained in my DNA cause she played it so much in our house growing up.
So other than your mom, who inspires you as an artist?
K: As of this moment in time, the names that pop into my head are Michael Jackson, Freddie Mercury and Alice Cooper… I have just recently become re-obsessed with him. Walter Russell - the philosopher - his life accomplishments inspire me a lot.
While we’re on the topic of inspiration, who would be at the top of your wish list for a collaboration?
K: I just had the opportunity to collab with Skrillex and Diplo who i think are incredible producers... so I am super excited about that! Spontaneous collaborations always seem to bring out the best work, so I prefer not to predict who I want to work with. I am also currently collaborating on a clothing line with Bad Bunch NYC, featuring my artwork.
You mentioned in a previous interview that you’ve written for Rihanna and Kylie Minogue. Can you tell me a bit more about that?
K: I was never in the room with them, but I turned out a lot of material as a songwriter and the songs seemed to find their way to them. Both have recorded songs of mine!
I absolutely love the new video for “Giant In My Heart.” Those are some fierce queens! Is there a story behind the concept for the video?
K: The message behind the Giant in My Heart video is that people are happiest when they are sincere about who they are. I wanted a really powerful story to convey this message. The story is specific to one person but the message relates to all people.
Your success appears to be taking you around the globe. Where has been the most exciting place for you to perform?
K: So far different shows have been great for different reasons. At Wembley arena I felt like Freddie Mercury, in Malta and rome I had a chance to see more of the architecture which I don’t usually get to see. Ibiza is where I ran into Diplo and Skrillex… Every show is unique and has brought me awesome experiences. There are a lot of “firsts” right now… Much Music Awards was my first television performance and also in my home country so that was so special to me.
What advice do you have for the kids wanting to follow in your footsteps?
K: My advice to anyone is any place is to be open to collaboration. Continuously being open to trying new things and get out of your comfort zone. Thats where you truly find out what you are capable of.
What can fans expect from the upcoming album?
K: The upcoming album is going to showcase many sides of me. A complete body of work that belongs together despite the fact that no two songs are alike. This album has a lot of variety, different emotion and its a complete story that takes you on a journey.
